When a design calls for curved trusses like you see in this construction photo, we like to use the wood species Douglas fir or larch. They both are up to 30% stronger than lodgepole pine and Engelmann spruce. We maintain a large inventory of Douglas fir and larch for just such purposes.
The key to successful arches is to start with a log or timber large
enough so that you do not cross over the center of the tree when you carve the curve into it, which would weaken the structural application.
Although it looks like these arches are crafted from symmetrical bent trees, we carve them round from larger logs. It’s part of our DNA to maintain a large inventory of varied wood species and sizes of naturally dried timber that is large enough to properly prepare curved logs such as these shown.
Half-log treads form the stairs and posts are inserted between each step. This enhances the look but also aids the family dog when it climbs up and down the stairway. Its paws can’t slip between the steps.
Pioneer Log Homes uses only natural dry-standing logs that were killed naturally in Western forests. They have structural integrity and are greener construction products because no live trees were harvested.

Scissors trusses are popular with many architects and home designers. It’s a great-looking structural truss style that adds to the attractiveness of the great room and makes the room appear more spacious.

Another great-looking structural element is steel straps and plates. These elements add another level of hand-made craftsmanship to your home that is not that common. The real key to classic banding is to carve into the timbers so the steel is let into the surface of the wood. Steel banding is an offshoot of craftsman style made popular by Greene and Greene craftsman-era style homes and furniture.
